The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter was tasked by AUSSAR at 1930hrs on Saturday night to conduct a distress beacon search in the Grafton area (as an over flying commercial aircraft were picking up the distress signal in that area).
Once in the search area, the helicopter narrowed down the signal location to a position near the South Grafton Airport.
Using a hand held tracking device, a foot search was carried out and an activated distress beacon was located, dumped in a drain not far from the airport. The beacon was disarmed and handed over to the police for further inquiry.
