Water winch at Byron Bay

Time: 12.41
Location: Byron Bay

The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter was tasked the area east of Byron Bay Lighthouse following a report of two patients in distress. Upon arrival, the helicopter located two patients in the water clinging to a surf board. A helicopter rescue crewperson was winched from the helicopter into the water. Due to the proximity of the patients in the water and the waves crashing on to the rocks, all three persons were towed by the helicopter out into calmer waters.
The first patient was then winched into the helicopter and assessed by the on-board paramedic. The helicopter then remained on scene while the second patient was picked up and taken to shore by a surf rescue jet ski. Apparently, both patients were friends and had been snorkelling together when one of the pair got into difficulties. A group of board riders went to their assistance and gave them one of their surfboards for floatation support. Both patients were examined onshore by paramedics and released without any further treatment.
